Passengers are prohibited from using smart luggage at the airport apron

PUTRAJAYA, NOV 18 – The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) has issued a safety directive prohibiting the use of smart luggage or ‘scooters’ as a mode of transport within the airport apron area.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Kapt Norazman Mahmud in a security directive dated 15 November said that although the smart luggage that can be carried offers convenience to passengers, its use like an apron can pose a security risk.

He said the area contains heavy machinery, aircraft, ground service vehicles and personnel, thus requiring strict compliance with safety rules to avoid accidents and damage to equipment.

“To reduce the risk of accidents and improve airport security, it is important to completely ban the use of smart luggage in restricted areas, set speed limits in permitted zones and educate passengers and staff about safe use practices,” he said.

In that regard, Norazman said the use of smart luggage is not allowed to be used beyond certain areas such as the terminal room and the waiting zone, and prohibition signs must be installed to inform users.

He said smart luggage equipped with electric motors must be completely deactivated including the battery components before being brought into the apron area.

Staff on the ground need to be trained to identify smart luggage that can be boarded and implement safety protocols to handle it including immediately reporting any use in the apron area to airport operators or security workers.

“In addition, ground handling service providers need to ensure that all personnel know the correct procedures for loading, storing and transporting smart luggage, especially if it contains lithium batteries or other electrical components that may pose a safety risk,” he said. Airlines and airport operators are also advised to include the safety instructions through pre-flight announcements including on tickets. – Named
