Policy: The country’s prosecuting authority has submitted a so-called constitutional charge to the National Assembly. If the National Assembly proceeds with the case, the outcome could be that the president is fired from office.

Boluarte has already been questioned, and her house has been searched. It comes after she has been seen with several Rolex watches and jewelry – which may not be quite in line with her modest public salary.

The president has previously explained that she borrowed the luxury items from a local governor.

Boluarte came to power in 2022 when President Pedro Castillo was removed and arrested after he refused to step down following a vote of no confidence. She then became the sixth president in six years in politically troubled Peru.
