Economy and business: Putin gave a wide-ranging speech at the International Economic Forum in St. Petersburg. He maintained, with reference to data on purchasing power, that Russia is among the world’s leading economies, even ahead of Germany.

The president did not present any figures that could support his version of reality.

He referred to the sanctions imposed by Western countries as illegal.

About three-quarters of Russia’s foreign trade is with friendly countries, the president said. To a gathering of several hundred guests from the same countries, Putin advocated expanded cooperation on technology transfer and foreign investment in Russia.

He said that work continues to develop an international payment system that will be independent of the West.

President Putin reiterated that the government of Ukraine has usurped power and is without legitimacy. Regarding the war in eastern Ukraine, he said that 47 settlements have been “liberated” by Russian forces since the start of the year.

These are figures that cannot be confirmed by independent sources. But there seems to be an opinion both in the West and in Ukraine that Russian forces have advanced on the eastern front in recent weeks.

Putin further said that any peace negotiations must take into account “the realities on the ground”, also a repetition of the position that Ukraine cannot count on gaining control over its entire territory.
