Six days after the end of the Tour de France, part of the peloton is traditionally back on the bike in the cycling-crazy Basque Country: Clasica San Sebastián is on the program, a prestigious race over steep hills. In the leader’s jersey looked at it extensively!
The Clasica San Sebastián is traditionally a mix of riders who come out of the Tour de France and the following criteriums and want to take one last time, and the drivers who start their second half in good spirits after a summer internship. It traditionally produces battle, interesting course, spectacle and every now and then a surprising winner.
We also have Dutch and Belgian winners: Bauke Mollema, participating again this year, is known as a real specialist who always competes for victory. And Remco Evenepoelalso present, had his definitive breakthrough here in 2019 by driving fabulously to victory at the age of 19.

Historically, the Jaizkibel (7.9 kilometers at 5.5 percent) is the most famous climb in this race, but in 2022 attention – in terms of importance for the course of the race – is mainly focused on the two hills that the Jaizkibel are in the trail.

The Clasica San Sebastián can – as always – count on a nice field of participants. Absolute eye-catcher is surely Tadej Pogacar, who is the big man from the Tour de France in the absence of the Jumbo-Visma stars Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert. The white jersey winner of the Tour de France changed his schedule and switched the Vuelta for one-day races, of which this Clasica San Sebastián is the first. In addition to Pogacar, UAE-Team Emirates also has Joao Almeida, Alessandro Covic and Juan Ayuso on offer for next Saturday.
At Quick Step-Alpha Vinyl they would actually start with two leaders: Remco Evenepoel and Julian Alaphilippe. However, the second, winner in 2018, had to fail due to a covid infection, while Evenepoel says he still needs to make some adjustments towards his big goal this autumn: the Tour of Spain. In that respect, Quick Step as a block is just as much of a question mark as Jumbo-Visma, where Tom Dumoulin now the eye-catcher.

BikeExchange-Jayco lines up two of its big names in Clasica San Sebastián: Simon Yatesalready impressive in a Basque one-day race earlier this week, and Mende winner Michael Matthews. If the Australian has his legs from his best days in the Tour de France, he should not just be flattened for this race either.
Tour winner Jonas Vingegaard may not be there, in addition to number two Pogacar we also come up with the names of Geraint Thomas (third, INEOS), David Gaudu (fourth, Groupama-FDJ), Romain Bardet (seventh, Team DSM), Alexey Lutsenko (ninth, Astana Qazaqstan Team) and Valentin Madouas (eleventh, Groupama-FDJ) against. How fresh are these men’s legs?

Other guys from the Tour are last year’s podium customers Neilson Powless (EF), Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious) and Mikkel Honoré (Quick Step), as well as San Sebastián specialist Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo) and classic driver Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R).
Finally, a few gentlemen who have to travel to the Basque Country with fresh legs. Giro winner Jai Hindley and his partner Wilco Kelderman at BORA-hansgrohe for example, or the Movistar duo Alejandro Valverde and Alex Aranburu. Other dangerous home drivers are Mikel Landa (Bahrain), Carlos Rodriguez (INEOS) and the Izagirre brothers.
