Crime and justice: The 42-year-old has been in prison since April 2022. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison last year for treason after condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine. It is the harshest sentence that has been imposed on a Kremlin critic in Russia in modern times, according to the AP news agency.

He receives the award for “passionate comments written at great personal risk from the prison cell, with warnings about the consequences of being in opposition in Vladimir Putin’s Russia and determined for a democratic future for his country”, the statement says.

Kara-Murza was poisoned both in 2015 and 2017, but both times escaped with her life intact.
