KUALA LUMPUR, 7 NOV – The East Coast states of the Peninsula and the north and east of Sabah are expected to receive 20 to 40 percent more rainfall during the North East Monsoon season this year compared to last year.
The Director General of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip said the situation occurred as this year’s northeast monsoon coincided with the La Nina phenomenon.
“Last year our northeast monsoon was in the El Nino phase. Usually this El Nino can cause our weather to be less rainy than usual, but this year it was replaced by La Nina.
“Based on the situation, the long-term forecast of most models shows that we will receive 20 to 40 percent more rain than last year,” he said, who was found after being a guest on an interview program on Bernama Radio today.
Mohd Hisham said based on the latest research information, the La Nina phenomenon in this country is expected to be weak to moderate in intensity and will not have a significant impact in terms of rainfall patterns.
“Based on the current model (study), La Nina may not be what scientists expected a few months ago.
“A few months ago it might have reached a moderate level of strength, but now it has dropped to a weak level, maybe there will be no significant effect,” he said.
However, he said the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as the Chairman of the National Disaster Management Committee always reminds every agency involved in disaster management to always be ready to face any possibility. – Named
