Weather: – It is very exceptional that we have had so many warm days already in May, says climate researcher Mika Rantanen at the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

On Thursday, the new record was a fact. The previous record from 2018 was 14 days in May where temperatures above 25 degrees were recorded.

Also on the last day of the month, over 25 degrees are reported in parts of Finland. This is about ten degrees above what is normal for May.

According to Rantanen, temperatures during the ongoing heat wave are two degrees higher than they would have been without global warming. He says heat waves and other types of extreme weather will only escalate as long as emissions of greenhouse gases continue.

The record in Finland was set on the same day that Bergen recorded a record number of days with temperatures above 20 degrees in May. 19 days is the new record in the Westland capital.

As a result of global warming, different types of heat records are being set more often over large parts of the world.
