Policy: Today there are 2,617 people living in the Norwegian settlements, which is the all-time population record on Svalbard, reports Svalbardposten. Among these are 941 foreigners from around 50 different countries.

But the authorities’ aim to strengthen the Norwegian presence on Svalbard does not appear in the population statistics.

The proportion of Norwegian citizens in Longyearbyen is now 64 per cent, which is the lowest proportion ever, according to Statistics Norway figures. In comparison, the proportion of Norwegians was 76 per cent in 2014 and in 2009 the Norwegian proportion was 85 per cent.

Mayor Lars Fause says he is taking the Statistics Norway figures into account, and he has no comments on the population trend.
