Crews conducted a series of controlled explosions Monday to break up the largest remaining section of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

This part of the bridge had leaned against the large container ship which, without steering, crashed into the bridge on 26 March. The accident led to the death of six road workers working on the bridge, and access to the important port city has since been restricted.

The detonations on Monday were intended to break up the largest remaining section of the bridge into smaller pieces so they can be removed by cranes and barges and towed away.

The plan was to carry out the blasting on Sunday, but the weather conditions meant that the work was postponed until Monday.
