Restrictions on transgender student restroom access a needless diversion from real issues

Restrictions on transgender student restroom access a needless diversion from real issues

Regarding the recent signing into law of Ohio Senate Bill 104 by Gov. Mike DeWine, restricting Ohio transgender students’ access to locker rooms and bathrooms (”DeWine signs ‘bathroom bill’,” Nov. 28): What a lot of noise, and taxpayers’ expense, over nothing!! When I was a student in Europe, shortly after World War II, I was a bit surprised by discovering hair salons that catered to both men and women, unlike in the United States, where ”salons” were for women, “barber shops” for men; it didn’t bother me but rather amused me to be seated next to a woman under a dryer while my hair was being cut.

When I also discovered the “loos” were also mixed, unisex, and in those days rather primitive bathrooms, I simply took it in stride, and obviously nobody ever suffered any anguish over it. The worst problem was keeping your shoes dry over a so-called “Turkish toilet.” Even in a “posh” hotel facility, the attendant was always a woman, handing you a towel, etc.

So, my advice to Gov. DeWine and the Ohio Senate is: Get over it, and spend your time, and public money, on real problems, of which there are many!
