Rock star storms off stage after confronting pro-Palestinian heckler

MELBOURNE, Australia — Radiohead singer Thom Yorke stormed off the stage during a solo show Wednesday after verbally clashing with a pro-Palestinian heckler.

The heckler can be heard yelling at Yorke about the Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip in a video posted on TikTok. Yorke then challenges the heckler to come up on the stage.

“Come up here and say that. Right here. Come on. Come up on the f—— stage and say what you want to say,” Yorke says. “Don’t stand there like a coward. Come here and say it.

“Come on. You want to piss on everybody’s night? Come on,” Yorke says. “OK, you do. See you later then.” Yorke then walks off the stage as the crowd begins to murmur, apparently stunned by what happened.

NBC News reports Yorke returned a short time later and played “Karma Police,” one of his hit songs from Radiohead. NBC reports the band has been criticized in the past for performing in Israel while many other acts have boycotted the country.

In a 2017 post on social media, Yorke said “Playing in a country isn’t the same as endorsing its government. “Music, art and academia is about crossing borders, not building them, about open minds, not closed ones, about shared humanity, dialogue and freedom of expression.”

Radiohead currently is on hiatus, so Yorke has been touring as a solo act in recent years, releasing three albums.

Formed in 1985, Radiohead is considered one of the most innovative bands ever and became a major act in the 1990s, especially with the release of their third album, “OK Computer,” in 1997. Their fourth album, “Kid A,” reached No. 1 in the U.S. They’ve sold more than 30 million recordings worldwide and have won six Grammys. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.
