Rome | Swiatek irritated by reporter’s question – “I’m not jealous”

The 22-year-old four-time Grand Slam winner is the big one for victory in the Italian capital. If she holds the cup on Sunday, it will be her third victory in Rome.

Swiatek has a winning record of 10-1 on clay this year and already won the WTA tournament in Madrid the week before. Only Elena Rybakina was too strong for the Polish woman in Stuttgart at the end of last month.

Things also went fairly crescendo against Rybakina’s compatriot Yulia Putitseva. Ok, no new bagel rolled out of the bakery, but thanks to a businesslike 6-3 6-4 victory, Swiatek reached the fourth round relatively easily, in which she will play against former Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber.

After her match, Swiatek was asked why she receives less attention than male stars Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. She replied, “Why what?” and added, “I don’t know if that was an accusation. I think I’m getting enough attention.”

Swiatek said she fully understands why Nadal and Djokovic have such huge fan bases. “I’m not jealous or anything. The focus on Nadal is understandable, as he may be playing his last tournament in Rome. And Novak is of course also the GOAT,” said Swiatek.

“To be honest, I don’t understand this question,” Swiatek concluded her answer.
