Rondout Valley girls repeat as sectional champs – Daily Freeman

WEST POINT, N.Y. — The Rondout Valley High girls indoor track and field team repeated as Section 9 Class B champions by besting 21 teams Friday night, Feb. 9, at the U.S. Military Academy.

The Ganders were led by senior Jacqueline Kennedy, who claimed the school’s only individual title in the girls’ competition by winning the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.58
seconds. She also took fourth place in the long jump.

Rondout Valley senior Tori DeGraw took second in the shot put and third in the weight throw. Sophomore Grace Kiszkiel was second in the triple jump with a leap of 31 feet, 9.25 inches.

Senior Merryn Arms took third in the high jump and sophomore Beatrice Wilhelm was third in the 1,500-meter race walk.

The Ganders’ 800-relay team of Kennedy, Kiszkiel, Julianna Turner and Olivia Waruch took third place, and the young and the 3,200-relay relay team of Hannah Chapin, Gypsy Wish, Lola Sherwood and Greta Sutherland-Roth finished second.

Rondout Valley relied on its strength in the field events and great overall depth to win the girls team championship. A total of 13 girls scored points in the meet.

“This was a hard-fought, back-and-forth battle by five teams at the top of the Section that came down to the last event,” Rondout Valley coach Jake Maloney said.

Rondout Valley’s girls team finished first with 81 points, followed by Tri-Valley (77), New Paltz (71), James I. O’Neill (69) and Our Lady of Lourdes (31).

Thomas Clark captured the 55-meter run in a time of :08.12 for Rondout Valley’s boys indoor track and field squad. Gabe Schoonmaker was second in the long jump with an
indoor school record-tying leap of 19-7 3/4.

Jack Kotsides took fifth place in the 1,000-meter run with a school record time of 2 minutes, 54.28 seconds.

Port Jervis took the boys championship with 78 points, followed by Tri-Valley (63), Marlboro (60), New Paltz (42), James I. O’Neill (41) and Rondout Valley (38.5).
