After a difficult start, Max Verstappen finally looked back with satisfaction on two free practice sessions for the Monaco Grand Prix on Friday. The Dutchman expects that he needs an even bigger buffer on Ferrari and Aston Martin.
“In the first free practice I was not happy with how the car went over the track curbs and bumps, so we had a hard time,” said Verstappen, who recorded the sixth fastest time in the first practice session. Carlos Sainz was the fastest.
The Limburger complained bitterly about his car in the first session of the day. Between the two practice sessions, Red Bull has clearly changed something for the better in the set-up. “In the second training it went much better and we were competitive.”
The World Cup leader therefore clocked the fastest time of the day, but his lead over Charles Leclerc was minimal. The Monegask was only 0.062 slower in his Ferrari. “They are close by, so we still have to work. And Aston Martin is also nearby.”

‘Could get closer and closer to the guardrail’
According to Verstappen, the Ferrari is still better over the big bumps that the street circuit in Monte Carlo has. “Their handling is better. We are a bit short there, so we need something to stay ahead of them. We really need a buffer.”
The two-time world champion still sees some margin in his car. “Hopefully we can find that. But today the car was already running quite well in the end. So that enabled me to really push and get closer and closer to the guardrail.”
