Accidents and natural disasters: Twelve newborns were taken out of the burning maternity ward in the district of Vivek Vihar in the east of the Indian capital, but six of them did not survive, says police spokesman Surendra Choudhary.

A seventh newborn had died before the fire broke out, while five babies are being treated for smoke damage in another hospital, says Choudhary.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the flames spread quickly as a result of an explosion in an oxygen tank, says the chief of the fire service in New Delhi, Atul Garg.

The police are now investigating the cause of the fire and whether the owner of the New Born Baby Care hospital can be held responsible.

On Saturday, 24 people died in a fire in an amusement park in the city of Rajkot in western India. At least nine of the victims were children.
