War and conflicts: The replay will start on Sunday and comes in response to North Korea sending another load of balloons filled with garbage the other way on Saturday, South Korea’s National Security Council said in a statement.

There have been several rounds of such broadcasts in recent weeks, and residents of the border areas have gradually become accustomed to receiving text messages asking them to leave the balloons and report them to the authorities.

North Korea promised to stop the broadcasts last Sunday, but resumed them a few days later.

Balloons have consistently been sent the other way by South Korean activists, often with the help of North Korean defectors. These often contain propaganda, mini radios, food and USB sticks with South Korean music and TV programs.

The North Korean authorities have been open about their balloons being filled with rubbish, and in several cases faeces have also been used.
