Sport: The Spanish Movistar rider won ahead of Julian Alaphilippe and Luke Plapp.

The trio were alone in the lead in the final phase of the hilly stage. Earlier in the day, there were seven cyclists involved in the breach.

With just over ten kilometers to go, Alaphilippe and Sanchez missed a roundabout and ran into each other. That gave Plapp the opportunity to stab, but the hatch was quickly sealed.

Thursday’s victory was the biggest so far in the career of 24-year-old Sánchez. The main field finished half a minute behind the winning time.

The UAE team had good control in defense of Tadej Pogacar’s pink leader’s jersey. The Slovenian started the day with an overall lead of 46 seconds over Ineos’ Briton Geraint Thomas.

The 180 kilometer stretch went from Viareggio to Rapolano Terme. The last half was hilly and had several tough gravel sections.

The main field was down to only about 40 men with three miles remaining. Later it split when Ineos drove hard on gravel in a crosswind.

On Friday, the riders will ride separately over 40.6 kilometers from Foligno to Perugia. It will be the first of two pace stages in this year’s Giro.
