Crime and justice: Five people have been arrested in a raid in the eastern province of Alicante, Antonio Martinez Duarte said on Thursday. He is the head of the unit that works to uncover drug trafficking and organized crime.

– This is the largest batch ever taken in Spain and the second largest in Europe. Among those arrested is a Mexican citizen with ties to the Sinaloa cartel, Duarte said.

He did not give the man’s name, but said he was responsible for receiving the shipment on Spanish soil and distributing it further in Europe. Spanish police say they have uncovered a large Sinaloa network that has been supplying Europe with illegal drugs.

The Sinaloa cartel is one of Mexico’s oldest, largest and most brutal. It has large ramifications within Mexico and exerts great influence, despite the fact that its founder, Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, and his son have been arrested and extradited to the United States, where they are now serving long prison terms.

During the operation in Alicante, the police also arrested three Spanish citizens and a Romanian. Five cars, a weapon, a lot of cash and lots of documents were seized.

Although Spain is a gateway to Europe for smuggled drugs, large quantities of synthetic drugs are rarely seized. Most of the smuggling traffic concerns cannabis and cocaine.
