WEBSTER TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A State Highway Patrol trooper shot and killed a man who reportedly fired several shots and pointed a gun at troopers after a high-speed chase through multiple counties.
Donovan Joyner, 26, of Defiance, Ohio, was pronounced dead at the scene Saturday following the chase, which ended northeast of Bowling Green, the BG Independent News reports.
WTVG Channel 13 reports the chase started shortly after midnight Saturday when deputies with the Defiance County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Joyner’s vehicle for a traffic violation. The vehicle refused to stop and deputies called Highway Patrol troopers for assistance.
The chase continued into Henry County and then into Wood County, WTOL Channel 11 reports. Joyner reportedly drove into a Wood County field, got out of the vehicle and began to run while carrying a handgun.
Joyner is accused of firing multiple shots during the chase. He reportedly was shot when he pointed his weapon at troopers.
No law-enforcement officers were injured in the incident. A passenger in Joyner’s vehicle who was not involved in the shooting was taken to a hospital for a medical evaluation.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting, reports say.
