Science and technology: The launch of the Starship rocket was the fourth in a row, and the first three attempts ended in failure.

Thursday went better. The launch was successful and the rocket then went into orbit at an altitude of 150 kilometers above the earth at a speed of 25,000 kilometers per hour.

The first stage of the rocket was disconnected a few minutes after launch and landed in the Gulf of Mexico.

The rest survived the journey back through the Earth’s atmosphere and, according to Elon Musk, “made a soft landing in the Pacific”.

Starship is designed as a reusable rocket. With their 121 meter height, the two sections rise 30 meters higher than the Statue of Liberty in New York.

Starship’s launch vehicles are twice as powerful as the Saturn V rockets used during the Apollo program of manned space flights from 1967 to 1972.

It was with Apollo 11 in 1969 that astronaut Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the moon.

SpaceX and Elon Musk are betting that Starship will be Nasa’s choice for the next manned lunar missions.
