Policy: The International Criminal Court’s chief factor, British international law lawyer Karim Khan, requested on Monday that an arrest warrant be issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as the three Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Mohammed Deif and Ismail Haniyeh.

All five are accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza and Israel respectively.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak believes this is “a very unhelpful development”, and he also reacts strongly to Khan’s likening the two Israeli leaders to the Hamas leaders in this way.

– A democratic state that exercises its legal right to self-defence cannot be morally compared to the terrorist group Hamas, says Sunak.

– This will certainly not contribute to bringing about a pause in the fighting, nor to getting emergency aid into the region and the hostages out, he says.
