A suspect has been arrested after two brutal attacks on Germans on Mallorca. The 29-year-old Mallorcan is accused of attempted murder, among other things, according to police on the Spanish holiday island. Just on Friday, he is said to have pushed a 32-year-old off a cliff on the nudist beach Playa del Mago in the municipality of Calvià in the southwest of Mallorca. According to police, the victim fell ten to twelve meters, but was lucky and escaped with bruises and abrasions.
In August, the alleged perpetrator is said to have attacked another bather from Germany on the same beach, first with a stone and then with a hammer. The victim was taken to hospital but was released after a few days. In both cases, the perpetrator escaped. On Friday, however, eyewitnesses were able to take photos of both the alleged attacker and his car.
The investigating police unit, Guardia Civil, says it suspects hate attacks and is investigating whether the suspect was targeting holidaymakers or homosexuals. A judge ordered pre-trial detention shortly after the arrest, it said.
