AKRON, Ohio — A 19-year-old Akron man will spend at least 15 years in prison in connection with the fatal shooting of a man during the attempted sale of some shoes.

Jontay Johnson was sentenced by Summit County Pleas Judge Jennifer Towell after he pleaded guilty to complicity to commit involuntary manslaughter, complicity to commit aggravated robbery, and having weapons under disability.

In a news release from Summit County Prosecutor Elliot Kolkovich, Carlos Godineaux, 26, went to the city’s West Side in February using Facebook Marketplace to arrange a meeting with a person to sell some shoes.

Johnson and another male, age 15, shot and killed Godineaux on Bellevue Avenue near Diagonal Road, authorities say. The 15-year-old admitted to one count of murder in juvenile court and is being held in the Ohio Department of Youth Services until he is 21, Kolkovich said.

“This was a senseless tragedy that led to the death of a young father of three,” Kolkovich said in a statement. “My sympathy goes to the victim’s family and I am thankful that those responsible for his death have been held accountable.”
