By Sim YH

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, NOV 24 – The Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAIDS Council) continues to implement efforts to raise awareness about HIV among the youth through a program to disseminate information and awareness about HIV to the community, especially among teenagers and school students.

In connection with that, the BDAIDS Council implemented the HIV Awareness Program for Youth and Peers (HAPPY) where it is a youth-led project with the aim of spreading awareness about HIV including knowledge about teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STIs) among teenagers and youth.

A total of 174 students from Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School (SMPAP Masna) and 36 students from Belait Arab School (SAB) took part in the program which took place in the respective schools, yesterday.

The program, which is also part of the school’s awareness program, saw a talk delivered at SMPAP Masna and SAB by BDAIDS Council representative and HAPPY Project Coordinator, Dayang Siti Kailene Jazlan Kashfi along with activities by the HAPPY team

During the talk, Dayang Siti Kailene shared the latest local statistics on STIs and teenage pregnancy and suggested abstinence as part of a method to prevent young people from engaging in risky habits that can lead to STI infections, pregnancy out of wedlock or early marriage.

The program is an interactive program by the BDAIDS Council with the hope that the students will be able to take home the messages delivered as part of the learning process as well as be practiced in their lifestyle.
