Up to 300 migrants are picked up in Nickelsdorf every day. You come on foot or by car across the Austro-Hungarian border. A “press” local eye pass.
Two soldiers at the Nickelsdorf border crossing are wearing sweaty stab protection vests under their neon yellow safety vests, because you have to reckon with anything here. On that Wednesday morning, a tugboat with 19 people in the hold had just been caught.
“The moment the colleague walked around the vehicle, the towing vehicle panicked, got out, ran over it via the A4 and towards Hungary. Everything was radioed immediately. The smuggler was arrested in Hungary within five minutes,” says one of the two soldiers. The smugglers would act more and more radically and brutally. With this it is already the 157th this year that was arrested by the officials. In 2021 there were 169 – almost double the number in 2020.
