Economy and business: On Thursday, the European Commission launched a formal investigation into the matter.

– We are worried that Facebook and Instagram encourage addiction, and that the age control methods that Meta has introduced are not sufficient, says EU Commissioner Margrethe Vestager in a press release.

– We want to protect the young people’s mental and physical health, she says.

After the two new data laws Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA) came into force earlier this year, the European Commission has initiated several investigations against some of the largest online giants.

A similar investigation is now underway against Tiktok.

The commission will particularly examine whether Meta is doing enough to prevent a so-called “rabbit hole effect”, where young people can click on to more and more extreme material.

The commission is already investigating whether Meta handles misleading advertising and political content correctly.
