The “garbage issue”… a joke that ignited the American elections

The “garbage issue”… a joke that ignited the American elections

How did the story start?

Last Monday, at a major election rally for Donald Trump in New York City, the American comedian supporting Trump, Tony Hinchcliffe, made a “joke” that angered millions.

During his comedy segment on stage, Hinchcliffe, known for his acerbic art, said: “There is a garbage island floating in the ocean… I think it is called Puerto Rico.”

Puerto Rico is an island belonging to America, in the Caribbean, and its residents are unable to vote in the US presidential elections, but there is a large community of Puerto Ricans residing in various parts of the United States, who are able to vote.

Puerto Rico’s comment was described as “abhorrent racism” by many, who described the comment as racist towards all Latin Americans.

Hours later, Donald Trump’s campaign headquarters disavowed the artist’s words.

Biden makes matters worse

The next day, current US President Joe Biden said that Puerto Ricans are good people and that the “only floating trash” he sees in this country… are Trump supporters.

Biden later tried to soften his comments, saying that by trash he meant the comedian’s words that incite hatred toward Latinos.

Trump supporters described Biden’s insults against them as disgusting, and said that Biden considers “half of the citizens to be trash.”

Biden’s words took away the Democratic advantage in the issue and shifted the blame to him.

Trump seizes the opportunity

At a Trump campaign rally in Wisconsin on Wednesday, the Republican candidate used the opportunity to respond to Biden.

In a controversial moment, the Republican presidential candidate arrived in Wisconsin, aboard a garbage truck.

And he said Trump “What do you think of my garbage truck? It’s a truck named after (Vice President) Kamala Harris and Joe Biden,” he told reporters before the campaign rally in Wisconsin.

The case has become described as a “garbage scandal” in the American media, and has increased the controversy surrounding the upcoming elections, which will be held next November 5.
