KUALA LUMPUR, 1 NOV – The Northeast Monsoon (MTL) or better known as the monsoon season in Malaysia is expected to start on November 5 and continue until March 2025, said the Director General of the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MET Malaysia), Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip.
He said in a statement today that during the period in question, five to seven episodes of heavy rain are expected to occur.
“During the initial phase of the MTL from November to December 2024, episodes of heavy rain are expected to occur in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah.
“While from January to February 2025, the states with more potential for heavy rain episodes are in Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah,” he said.
However, Mohd Hisham said if the prevailing monsoon is strong and at the same time there is a low pressure weather system, continuous heavy rain can occur in other states.
He said the continuous heavy rain for several days could result in flooding in low-lying areas and near the river.
Mohd Hisham said if continuous heavy rain occurs simultaneously with high tides and storm surges, the risk of flooding could be greater.
extreme.
In addition, he said, continuous and strong northeasterly winds could cause rough seas, the risk of sea level rise and large waves in the waters of the South China Sea.
“Ahead of the final phase of the MTL, which is January to March 2025, the northern area of the peninsula is expected to experience less rain.
“This situation will cause hot and dry weather and the potential for heat waves,” he said.
However, Mohd Hisham said the situation is predicted not to be as bad as in 2024 because the La Nina phenomenon is expected to start from the end of this year until the middle of next year. – Named
