Policy: In May, 17,231 asylum applications were registered, while in the period January to May, 103,467 applications were received. This is 17.6 per cent fewer than in the same period in 2023.

Figures from BAMF show that a third come from Syria, while Afghanistan and Turkey come next.

The immigration authorities have processed 131,750 applications so far this year. Fewer than half (46.8 per cent) were granted asylum, citing a threat to personal safety. In the same period last year, 108,606 applications were processed.

Migration is the hottest topic in German political debate at the moment and dominates the ongoing elections to the EU Parliament, as well as in three important federal states that will have elections in the autumn.
