The power on board had gone out while the ship was still docked for maintenance in Baltimore, about ten hours before it left the port facility. The vessel was then hit by several power cuts, the last just minutes before the accident.

This appears in a preliminary investigation report from the US federal transport authority NTSB.

The large container ship crashed out of control into the bridge on 26 March. The accident led to the death of six road workers working on the bridge, and access to the important port city has since been restricted.

On Monday, the largest remaining section of the bridge that had leaned against the ship was blown to pieces using controlled explosions.
