Policy: Biden’s package of measures is an attempt to nullify Donald Trump’s stronger support among voters when it comes to immigration policy. The presidential order prohibits migrants who enter the United States illegally from seeking asylum on days when more than 2,500 people cross the border. In addition, it will be easier to send them back to Mexico.

UNHCR writes in a statement that the measures entail a restriction of the right to seek asylum in the United States.

– The new measures will deprive many who need international protection of the opportunity to apply for asylum, and these may now be left without a real opportunity to seek safety, the UN body writes in the statement. Furthermore, the US is encouraged to “live up to its international obligations”, and the Biden administration is encouraged to “reconsider the restrictions that undermine the fundamental right to seek asylum”.
