Weather: China’s climate envoy Liu Zhenmin and White House climate adviser John Podesta met this week for the first time in their new roles.

Their predecessors Xie Zhenhua and John Kerry were known to have a good relationship, which is believed to be part of the reason an agreement was reached at the COP28 summit in Dubai last year.

The meetings between Liu and Podesta in Washington this week were part of the preparations for the next major climate meeting, COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the US State Department says.

Ahead of the meeting in Dubai, China promised to submit a plan to overcome methane emissions. China is the largest source of such emissions, which particularly occur in connection with the country’s coal mining.

China and the US say they will together organize a special meeting in connection with COP29 where reducing methane emissions is the theme.
