The US is ready with an arms package for Israel

On April 24, President Joe Biden signed an arms package worth 95 billion dollars to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Parts of the package to Israel are now ready to be sent off, the Biden administration says. However, Congress must give the green light for the shipment first. Photo: Evan Vucci / AP / NTB

War and conflicts: The Biden administration has formally briefed Congress on the shipment, as it must be approved there first. Two congressional sources told the AFP news agency on Tuesday. The Wall Street Journal has also been informed of this.

It is the first arms shipment to Israel that the Biden administration has announced after another shipment, consisting of 3,500 bombs, each weighing 900 kilograms, was put on hold earlier this month. The bomb package was put on hold due to US concerns that they could be used against civilians during the Israeli offensive in Rafah in the south of the Gaza Strip.

The military package now ready at the site consists of tank ammunition worth about $700 million, tactical vehicles worth $500 million, and grenades worth $60 million, according to the two sources.

It was not clear on Tuesday when this package will be sent to Israel.

The package is part of the comprehensive $95 billion package recently passed by Congress – a package that includes defense aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan.

Congress may still block arms sales to Israel, as left-leaning members of Biden’s Democratic Party have become increasingly outraged by the number of civilians killed in the Gaza Strip.
