Eight of the 88 seats in the new Brandenburg state parliament will be occupied by Potsdam residents. Since the Greens, the Left Party and the Free Voters did not clear the five percent hurdle on Sunday, there will be some shifts in parliament after the election. The PNN provides an overview of which politicians from the state capital are part of the newly elected state parliament.
Who is new? Although Manja Schüle (SPD) has been Minister of Culture in Brandenburg for five years, she has not yet sat in the state parliament – now she is there thanks to a direct mandate in the contested inner-city constituency 21, where she was able to prevail against the surprise winner of 2019, the Green Party’s Marie Schäffer. Before moving to the state government, Schüle already sat in the Bundestag for Potsdam from 2017 to 2019 and was also a Potsdam city councilor.

Also new in the state parliament is BSW top candidate Robert CrumbachThe chairman of the regional association of the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW), which was only founded this year, has been working as a labour judge for 30 years, in Potsdam since 1998.
All other representatives from the state capital were also part of the state parliament: Daniel Keller (SPD) as well as Uwe Adler (SPD) were able to defend their direct mandates in the south of Potsdam and the north of Potsdam, which they had already won in 2019. Both are also Potsdam city councilors. Keller was, among other things, president of the Brandenburg Judo Association and the German Judo Federation. In the state parliament, he has led the SPD parliamentary group as chairman since 2021. Adler, who worked as a criminal investigator before switching to politics, was able to win the second most first votes nationwide on Sunday. The Potsdam-born and resident John Funke (SPD) was able to defend his direct mandate – but for the constituency Havelland I.

Both CDU district leader Steve Bretz as well as his party colleague Saskia Ludwigmember of the Golm local council, both entered parliament via the state list. The Potsdam AfD district leader Dennis Hohloch won his direct mandate in the Oder-Spree II constituency.
Some Potsdam residents will now have to vacate their seats in the state parliament: These include Marie Schäffer (Greens), Isabelle Vandre (Left), Marlen Block (Left) and Matthias Stefke (BVB/Free Voters). This means that the new parliament will have slightly fewer Potsdam residents than in the previous legislative period: previously there were ten MPs, now there are eight.
