The remains of a 1968 plane crash in the Swiss Alps have been uncovered due to the melting of the glacier where the incident took place.

Swiss police reported this Friday that the plane’s chassis had been found a day earlier on the Alets Glacier, southwest of the canton of Valais, near the summit of Jungfrau and Mönch.

According to police statements cited by local media, the investigation determined they were the remains of a Piper Cherokee, registration HB-OYL, which crashed at this location on June 30, 1968.

The Swiss newspaper 24 Heures reports that there were three people on board, a professor, a chief physician and his son, all from Zurich. Their bodies were found after the accident, but the remains of the ship were not found.

Law enforcement said work to recover the remains would be done as soon as possible. “At the time of the accident, more than fifty years ago, the technical means of recovering aircraft remains in difficult terrain were limited,” police explain.

According to media, a mountain guide discovered the remains during an expedition in the area. Due to climate change and glacier melting, the route has changed and now passes where the fragments of the plane were found.

Several fragments were also exposed within a radius of 100 meters. “We found a glass case, a cap, and different parts of the plane, such as the seat and wings,” mountain guide Dominic Nealan told Blick.

“Due to the melting of the glacier, especially in summer, it is possible that other fragments or remnants of the accident may be separated from the ice,” the police statement said.
