Culture and entertainment: For the first time in nearly 50 years, royal orders will be awarded to people who have made “exceptional efforts for the country”, reports TT.

There is talk of a newly established state ceremony at the Royal Palace in Stockholm on Friday. There, 13 Swedish citizens will be given honorary degrees by King Carl Gustaf. He is indeed the grand master of the four orders of knights, which are the Order of the Seraphim, the Order of Swords, the Order of the Nordstjärne and the Order of Vasa, according to the court’s website.

ABBA members Benny Andersson, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Reuss and Björn Ulvaeus will all become Commanders of the First Class of the Royal Vasa Order for “very outstanding efforts in Swedish and international music life”.

The Vasa Order was established in 1772, but has not been awarded since 1975. Then the Riksdag decided to stop what is described as an overly generous distribution of such orders.

– In 1974, 1,100 orders were awarded, today 13 will be awarded. It had become “order instead of a pay rise” for many public employees, says spokesman for the order council, Björn von Sydow, to TT.

In addition to the ABBA members, the actress Eva Rydberg, a social worker, a researcher, a businesswoman and several military personnel will be honored – the latter for leadership in war-like situations.
