Spider-Man star Tom Holland has announced that he will be playing doomed lover Romeo Montague in a striking new stage adaptation of William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet.
Directed by the Jamie Lloyd Company, this West End adaptation will star Holland, 27, as one-half of the star-crossed lovers Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet.
This marks a high-profile theatre comeback for the Marvel Cinematic Universe star, who first made his stage debut as a teenager, playing the title role in Billy Elliot the Musical between 2009 and 2010.
While further casting details have yet to be released, the show will start its run from Saturday 11 May up until Saturday 3 August 2024… meaning that we shouldn’t have to wait too long for our Juliet.
Holland, whose famous dad recently had fans shocked, announced his casting via his Instagram account, sharing a picture of the production’s poster and the Jamie Lloyd Company logo. He accompanied this with a simple instruction: ‘Sign up now. Link in bio.’
Meanwhile, London’s Duke of York’s Theatre, who will host the show, shared the news in an Instagram post of their own. ‘Tom Holland is Romo in Jamie Lloyd’s pulsating new vision of Shakespeare’s immortal tale of wordsmiths, rhymers, lovers and fighters,’ the announcement read.
British theatre director Jamie Lloyd is best known for his recent production of Sunset Blvd, starring Nicole Scherzinger, and A Doll’s House with Jessica Chastain.
‘Tom Holland is one of the greatest, most exciting young actors in the world. It is an honour to welcome him back to the West End,’ said Lloyd of Holland’s casting.
As with the director’s previous work, fans can expect an expressionistic, minimalistic retelling of Shakespeare’s tale, and one which will likely leave fans in floods of tears.
Spoiler alert: they both die at the end.
‘From Spider-Man to tragic-man’ commented @shanim1lrad in the comments below Holland’s post.
Meanwhile, others were quick to congratulate the actor on his news… and he has no shortage of offers from fans offering to be his Juliet.
‘I can be your Juliet!’ volunteered the user @Vdaella, in the comments below.
‘Zendaya will be Juliet, right?’ joked @brendalazo.15 in reference to the star’s girlfriend and Spider-Man co-star, who plays Mary Jane in the franchise.
‘This is not Spider-Man 4,’ added a disappointed @askkboutdaniel. Many fans had been hoping for news of Spider-Man’s next adventure following Tom’s promise of a ‘big announcement tomorrow’ on his Instagram account yesterday.
‘NOOOOOO, not a movie where I have to watch you die!’ stressed @baileyylowe over the play’s tragic ending.
Well, if you thought that Spidey’s snapping into dust at the end of Avengers: Infinity War was upsetting…
Romeo and Juliet will play at London’s Duke of York’s Theatre from May 11 to August 3, 2024. General booking opens to the public on February 13 at 12pm via http://www.thedukeofyorks.com
