Policy: The four dead migrants were picked up from the sea on Saturday, says the National Guard in Tunisia.

The National Guard states that the coast guard picked up 52 migrants alive in a separate operation. Nine people smugglers were arrested, and the boats they were in were seized.

Earlier on Saturday, the National Guard stated that at least 23 migrants were missing after they had left by boat from Tunisia bound for Italy.

In recent weeks, there has been an increase in the number of migrant boats trying to cross the sea from Tunisia to Italy. In Tunisia there is a migration crisis and the country has overtaken Libya as the most important destination for people leaving Africa and the Middle East with the aim of reaching Europe.

On Saturday, Tunisians demonstrated against the presence of migrants from countries south of the Sahara who use Tunisia as a stepping stone to reach Europe.
