two rocket launches of unknown origin target an American base

Published on :

The American military command in the Middle East reported Saturday, November 26, two rocket attacks targeting one of their bases in northeastern Syria. The origin of the shots is still unknown, but a Turkish offensive against Kurdish forces, which control the area, has been underway in the region for a week.

American positions in northeastern Syria are again affected. four days ago, a Turkish strike endangered the American forces. The latter were posted in a joint base with the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). Friday evening, two shots targeted the American base of al-Chaddadeh without causing any casualties or damage. Ankara forces could again be the cause.

But ten days ago, the US military reported a rocket attack on a coalition base near Syria’s largest oilfield. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, this attack came this time from pro-Iranian militias.

Fear of an imminent ground operation

US forces maintained their presence at least in northeast Syria where they fought the Islamic State organization alongside Kurdish forces. These same Kurdish forces are now targeted by Turkey because they are assimilated to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) which it considers a terrorist organization. The Turkish offensive has been restricted to the airways for the moment, but on the spot, there are fears of an imminent ground operation if Ankara manages to obtain the green light from the two major local players: Russia or the United States.

Turkey says it is determined to secure its border, saying that the attack that left six dead and 81 injured in the heart of Istanbul on November 13 was ordered from Kobané, in northern Syria, which the Kurds have denied.
