Annemiek van Vleuten is the winner of the Tour de France Femmes 2022! She won in her yellow jersey the last stage, on top of La Super Planche des Belles Filles. It made for a big smile in the flash interview.
‘Winning here in the yellow jersey is a dream come true, wow!’, she begins. Van Vleuten had to work hard for it after two days of stomach flu and now four (!) bike changes in the last stage. “It was not an easy stage and not an easy week. This Tour was a roller coaster for me and if you come up solo in yellow, that’s the best way.’
The joy is enormous and Van Vleuten plans to celebrate the overall victories in the Giro Donne and Tour de France. ‘Yesterday (Saturday, ed.) was a great day, but I wanted to stay focused and not celebrate yet. Now it can all settle down a bit, with just ice cream and pizza tonight! We often think about tomorrow when we have won, but I want to celebrate this well with the team.’
Van Vleuten hopes that Tour for women will continue to grow
Van Vleuten as the first winner of the Tour de France Femmes, the organizers could have been less fortunate. She herself remains modest. “I am proud to be the first winner of this new version of the Tour for women. I hope it is the start of an even bigger event, for men and women. This is a milestone, with hopefully many more editions to follow.’
