Sport: The Dutch Red Bull driver recorded a 1.27.641 in the final qualifying lap, relegating Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc to 2nd place by 0.108 seconds. Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Pérez was 0.235 seconds behind him.

– To be honest, it felt pretty terrible, but somehow I still ended up on top. I don’t know what happened to the others, said Verstappen afterwards.

The second sprint race of the season will be held on Saturday. Verstappen won the first in Shanghai two weeks ago.

He has also won four of the five Grand Prix races that have taken place so far and leads the overall standings in pursuit of his fourth consecutive World Championship title.

Daniel Ricciardo in RB was fourth in sprint qualifying, ahead of Carlos Sainz in Ferrari and Oscar Piastri in McLaren. Both Mercedes cars were eliminated before the last qualifying round, and George Russell and Lewis Hamilton start as number 11 and 12 in the sprint race.
