Medicine and health: Among other things, the Minister of Health wants the Norwegian Health Authority to be able to prohibit healthcare personnel who have lost their authorization, or who pose a danger to their patients, from providing healthcare. If it is not complied with, the Norwegian Health Authority can impose a compulsory fine on the relevant person.

– The changes we are making now will strengthen patient safety, says Vestre to Aftenposten.

Today, it is possible for health personnel who have lost their authorization to continue working in health-related professions that do not require authorization.

Vestre’s proposal will, for example, prevent a former nurse who abused patients in a hospital from getting a job as a nursing assistant in a nursing home.

He acknowledges, however, that there are gray areas and treatment options that fall outside the authorization system and the “ordinary” health services that are regulated under the health legislation.

– The bill will not prevent healthcare personnel who have lost their authorization from providing alternative treatment or using titles that do not require authorization, says Vestre.
