Victoria Monét revealed she has been single for nearly a year now.
On Monday, the “On My Mama” singer confirmed that she and John Gaines broke up. The two share 3-year-old daughter Hazel.
“With good intentions, we honestly have been avoiding a formal statement about something as natural and personal as love,” they wrote in a joint statement shared online.
Although the exes “preferred to keep this out of the public” to avoid further “pain,” they felt the need to address “all the questions and extremely false accusations” about their relationship.
“Ultimately we decided to be open and address it in hopes to put a period on the question marks for the sake of our healing process,” they wrote.
“We spent the last 10 months trying to respectfully and privately navigate the fact that we are no longer in a relationship,” the statement continued. “Though we still completely adore and respect each other, we are not a couple anymore.”
Despite their split, Monét, 35, and the fitness trainer, 33, insisted there was “no infidelity, toxic behavior, nor drama” that led to their breakup.
“We both just have some fundamental growing to do that would be best done apart so we can remain the best versions of ourselves for our daughter,” they said. “It simply didn’t work out and that’s OK. We still think the world of each other and operate with love in every interaction for our family.”
They made it clear that Hazel is “their number 1 priority forever” and that “no relationship status” will ever change that.
“We are committed to doing the inner work and trust that God will place us both where we belong in due time.”
The former couple thanked their supporters for their “care and concern” and asked that everyone give them “peace and space” to raise their “incredible” daughter.
“We plan to remain a family regardless of our public facing title, so please when you see us together with Hazel, be understanding and gentle,” they concluded. “We appreciate you all for hearing us out and hope to be kept in your well intentioned prayers.”
Although it’s unclear when Monét and Gaines started dating, they first sparked romance rumors after he appeared in her “Moments” music video, which was released in February 2020.
They announced they were expecting their daughter in December 2020.
Although they seemingly broke up around November 2023, the pair still attended the 2024 Grammys together in February.
The family of three walked the red carpet in coordinated Atelier Versace looks, with the mother-daughter duo wearing matching brown gowns for the special occasion.
That night, Monét took home the awards for best new artist, best R&B album and best engineered album, non-classical.
