Policy: Lam was nominated by a committee of the Vietnamese Communist Party last week. After the vote in the National Assembly, he promised that he will be loyal to the nation, the state and the people.

– I will do my best to carry out the task I am given, said the 66-year-old.

The new president has headed the Ministry of Security, which controls the police in Vietnam, since 2016. In 2021, he was elected to the Politburo, which is the most powerful decision-making body in the country.

Lam has been central to the ongoing fight to tackle widespread corruption. Critics, for their part, believe that he is used as a tool to push opponents to the sidelines in political conflicts.

The role of president is mainly ceremonial, but is also one of the four so-called pillars, the four most important political positions in the country. The others are party leader, prime minister and leader of the national assembly.

The appointment is the biggest change yet in a leadership reshuffle following an unusual period of political turbulence in the Southeast Asian one-party state.
