Sport: Scheffler was handcuffed early this morning American time after allegedly failing to stop his car on orders from the police when he arrived at the facility before the second round.

According to ESPN journalist Jeff Darlington, a policeman is said to have screamed at the world leader and asked him to get out of the car. The incident happened when the police directed traffic after a pedestrian died after a collision.

Scheffler was then brought to the police station and charged with several matters, according to ESPN. Among other things, it will concern violence against a police officer and reckless driving.

In a statement, Scheffler says that it is all about a misunderstanding.

– I did as I was told by the police and it was a very chaotic situation, which is understandable considering the tragic accident that had happened. There was a huge misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do. It was never my intention not to listen to the police. I hope to put this aside and focus on golf today.

– My heart goes out to the next of kin after the death. I spent some time stretching and warming up in the jail cell since I thought I was going to be able to play. I was lucky to get back and play, said Scheffler after the round.

– It’s just a big misunderstanding that will probably be resolved, he said of the arrest.

The charge of violence concerns that a policeman grabbed Scheffler’s car to get him to stop, and then he was dragged after the car for a few metres. The policeman was subsequently checked in hospital.

A few hours later, Scheffler was released and back at the golf course in Louisville. The American was four shots under par after the first round, and he continued to play solid golf with five shots under par in the second round. He is thus nine shots under par in total.
