LOS ANGELES, NOV 7 – Stephen Curry outplayed Olympic teammate Jayson Tatum as the Golden State Warriors continued their stellar start to the season with a 118-112 win over the Boston Celtics yesterday.
The bout was seen as Tatum’s chance to prove himself after being sidelined for several games by Team USA Golden State coach Steve Kerr during his gold medal-winning Paris Olympic campaign last August.
Although Tatum made an impact after coming back in the second half to finish with 32 points, Curry and the Warriors eventually pulled out a hard-fought victory at TD Garden.
“Like we always say ‘back each other up’ – and the guys came out brave and committed to doing that,” said Curry, who had 27 points, nine assistsseven rebounds and four steals.
“We can beat anyone. It’s hard. You have to take up the challenge.
But this is a different year and we’re trying to take it slow and build an identity,” added Curry, who moved up to 30th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, surpassing Charles Barkley (23,757 points).
Curry got offensive support from Andrew Wiggins who recorded 16 points, while Buddy Hield added 16 points off the bench, along with Kyle Anderson, 11 points and Jonathan Kuminga, 10 points.
“We gave a great performance and you never know whose turn it will be to shine. I like the atmosphere in our team but it’s only eight games, there’s still a long way to go,” Curry said ESPN.
Meanwhile, Tatum scored 24 points in the second half to help Boston rally from a 14-point deficit in the third quarter and take a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter. – AFP
