In recent years, Berlin’s city cleaning service has installed more and more garbage cans to deal with the amount of dirt in the inner city districts. However, compared to another European city that is considered to be very clean, there are still significantly fewer garbage cans on the public streets.
In 2019, there were 24,851 garbage bins on Berlin’s streets and in parks; now there are 26,927, which is more than 2,000 more. This is evident from the Senate’s response to a query from the Left Party. Around 90 percent of the garbage bins are hung or placed on the streets and squares.
The emptying of the garbage bins depends on demand, it said. “In 2023, a total of 6,732,430 waste bin emptyings were carried out on public roads.” In addition, there were 620,604 emptyings in parks and forests under the jurisdiction of the BSR.
By comparison, the Austrian capital Vienna has hung up and provided almost as many wastepaper baskets: around 21,000, which are emptied up to six times a day. Vienna has only half the population of Berlin, so there is almost twice as much garbage can density on the streets. In Berlin there is about one garbage bin for every 140 residents, while in Vienna there is only one for every 85 residents. Accordingly, Vienna is considered one of the cleanest cities in Europe, which is difficult to say about Berlin.
