Wayne Couzens handed new sentence for flashing in months before Sarah Everard murder

Former Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens has been sentenced to 19 months in prison for three incidents of flashing he committed in the months before he abducted, raped and murdered Sarah Everard.

Couzens, who appeared at the Old Bailey on Monday via video link from HMP Frankland in County Durham, spoke only to confirm his name.

He hung his head throughout proceedings.

The former Metropolitan Police officer, 50, is already serving a whole life jail sentence for the murder of Ms Everard, 33.

The three indecent exposure incidents Couzens was sentenced for on Monday took place in woodland and at a fast food restaurant in Kent between November 2020 and February 2021.

One offence was committed just days before he kidnapped, raped and killed Ms Everard. The first occurred only a few miles from where Couzens took Ms Everard after he abducted her in March 2021.

More from Crime

The ex-Metropolitan Police officer was supposed to be on duty and working from home when he exposed himself to a female cyclist in a country lane in Kent in November 2020.

She told the court that Couzens had taken away her “freedom” to enjoy country walks and cycling with his “selfish, aggressive act”.

She said: “I remember vividly being concerned that somebody who could expose themselves to a stranger in such an intimidating way could go on to commit much more serious acts. This is what happened.”

Speaking directly to Couzens, she said: “Four months after you exposed yourself to me, you raped and murdered an innocent woman.

“There were opportunities to identify you and they were not taken. I did not feel that, when I reported your crime, it was taken as seriously as I felt that it should have been.

“The horror of what happened will remain with me for the rest of my life.”
