Officers and a collision analyst responded to the Nov. 28, 2023 collision involving a vehicle and tow truck near the village of Kitscoty, located approximately 226 kilometres east of Edmonton, police said in a Monday release.

The tow truck was parked on the side of the road with its emergency lights activated and its tilt deck in a ramp position when investigators say a vehicle drove up the ramp and struck the tow truck driver.

“The driver of the tow truck broke his pelvis and broke his back in multiple places,” said Alberta RCMP Cst. Cory Riggs, adding the driver was driving with a suspended driver’s license.

“The delay (in charges) is due to waiting to get warrants, medical records and workplace occupation had to do their investigation.”

Cheyanne Morgan, 37, from Luseland, Sask., is charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and operation of a vehicle while prohibited.

Morgan is scheduled to appear in Lloydminster court on Jan. 14.

“This tragic collision has changed the life of this individual,” said Kitscoty RCMP Cpl. Brian Weisbrod in the news release.

“This serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of slowing down to 60 km/h when passing tow trucks, emergency vehicles, or road maintenance crews with flashing lights. This simple action can save lives.”
