SOUTHPORT, England — The world’s oldest living man died on Monday at the age of 112.
John Alfred Tinniswood died at the assisted living facility he lived at in Southport, England, according to the BBC.
Tinniswood, who was born August 26, 1912, the same year the Titanic sank, and became the UK’s oldest man in 2020. His cause of death has not been released.
He was recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s oldest man in April 2024 after Juan Vicente Pérez, who was 114 years old and lived in Venezuela, passed away.
He told Guiness that he did not feel any differently about his age after receiving the reward.
“I don’t feel that age, I don’t get excited over it. That’s probably why I’ve reached it. I just take it in my stride like anything else,” Tinniswood said. “I can’t think of any special secrets I have. I was quite active as a youngster; I did a lot of walking. But to me, I’m no different [to anyone]. No different at all.”
His family said he was intelligent, decisive, brave, calm in any crisis, talented at math and a great conversationalist.
He met his wife Blodwen at a dance in Liverpool, and they married in 1942. Together, they had their daughter Susan.
Tinniswood served in the Royal Army Pays Corps during World War II, where – in addition to accounts and auditing – his work involved logistical tasks, such as locating stranded soldiers and organizing food supplies, according to the BBC.
In a statement to Sky News, his family said his last day was surrounded by music and love.
“John always liked to say thank you. So on his behalf, thanks to all those who cared for him over the years, including his carers at the Hollies Care Home, his GPs, district nurses, occupational therapist and other NHS staff,” his family said.
The Guinness Book of World Records has not announced the new oldest living man as of Tuesday morning.
